After more than a decade of teaching Singapore Math, coaching parents, and training teachers, I’ve learned that the best training programs don’t just share information—they build confidence and provide practical strategies you can apply long after the training ends.

1. Does the training reflect authentic Singapore Math?

Singapore Math has become a well-known term, but not every program that carries the label teaches the authentic approach.

As Singapore Math has gained international recognition, the term is sometimes used quite broadly. Some programs faithfully teach the approach, while others borrow a few strategies without reflecting the philosophy that makes Singapore Math so effective.

Authentic Singapore Math is much more than using Singapore Math textbooks, worksheets, or problem sets. Its effectiveness comes from how mathematics is taught.

A quality training should help participants understand:

• The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach
• The Bar Model Method for solving word problems
• How to build conceptual understanding before introducing procedures
• Mathematical communication
• Critical and creative problem solving

2. Has the trainer actually taught children using Singapore Math?

There’s a difference between learning about Singapore Math and teaching it to children day after day.

The most effective trainers don’t just understand the concepts—they’ve spent years helping students make sense of them. They’ve seen where children struggle, what misconceptions arise, and which teaching strategies truly help students build understanding.

When evaluating a training provider, consider asking:

• Have they taught Singapore Math directly to children?
• Have they worked with learners of different ages and abilities?
• Can they share examples of how they help students overcome common learning challenges?
• Have they successfully coached teachers or parents in implementing the approach?

These experiences shape the kind of practical advice a trainer can offer. Rather than relying solely on theory, experienced educators can draw from real teaching situations and explain not just what works, but when, why, and how to use different strategies effectively.

In my own journey, I’ve spent more than a decade teaching Singapore Math to learners from Kindergarten through Grade 10, primarily in Singapore Math enrichment centers, where I worked closely with students across a wide range of abilities. A parent who wants to help with homework needs something very different from a teacher introducing fractions or a principal leading school-wide implementation.

• Will the concepts be explained step by step?
• Will this help me support my own child’s learning?

• Will the examples match the grade levels I teach?
• Does the training explain how concepts progress from one grade level to the next?
